Apathy,
cynicism alive and kicking
You can smell it in the air. People are scurrying around campus
and creating a buzz about who they are voting for and where
the nearest polling place is before their next class.
Oh wait. If the United States' voters are apathetic, then
what does that make voting at Cal State Long Beach? Last year,
less than 10 percent of students on campus voted and I don't
blame them at all.
I know I'm not the only one who thinks that this whole student
government thing at CSULB is ridiculous.
Even more ridiculous is how serious the students running for
office take the whole thing, which is not indicative of how
the campus feels.
There is one candidate who has really entertained me over
the last month or so. So much in fact that his presence on
campus has begun to drive me up the wall.
So let's get it ORON!
Oron Maher is the classic example of a person taking student
government way too seriously. I constantly see him roaming
around campus in a suit, hobnobbing with whomever he can to
try to scare up votes.
In fact, I believe that we are fortunate that there are no
babies on campus, because Maher would be smooching them up
trying to get their votes.
In my years on campus I have never seen anyone so ridiculously
serious about being elected that it's actually sad. Maher
reminds me of Jason Schwartzman's character Max Fisher in
the film Rushmore, a guy that is taking life way too seriously.
Not only is his face plastered all over camps, but he's got
the worst slogans that I've heard since Tisha Cook ran for
secretary in the sixth grade and used the slogans "Nobody
Can Cook Better," and "See What's Cooking with Tisha."
Which is exactly the point. The last time campus elections
meant anything was in elementary school, and even then you
knew who was going to win because the popular person always
ran against some nerd -- which raises the question which of
these is Maher, the popular guy or the nerd?
I know my vote is in.
I recently visited Maher's Web site, oronmaher.com, and found
out that he was born on Oct. 31 and raised in Cypress. He
was also the president of the Bob Saget (note the single g
Oron) fan club.
Maher's Web site also explains his platform, which makes it
seem as if he's running for mayor of Long Beach or President
of CSULB, rather than A.S.I. president.
Which raises a bigger question, what does A.S.I. actually
do? I know, I've heard it before, but from the outside looking
in, I still believe that they actually don't do anything.
Therefore, this whole election process is pointless and so
is all the enthusiasm that Oron Maher has exhibited.
I don't want to vote for Maher, I want to never see him again
and I feel dirty for looking at his silly Web site, which
if you didn't catch it the first time is oronmaher.com. Pay
it a visit and join his street team.
I would just like to take this opportunity to remind everyone
running, and especially Maher, that this is no long elementary
school or even high school. You are at CSULB to learn, not
to be the most popular person on campus, because frankly nobody
on this campus cares.
Alex Roman is a journalism major and will not be voting
at CSULB.
