opinion: our view

Week long break needed in Fall

After a fun filled spring break, it has come to our minds that a weeklong break during the fall semester may be essential. Fall semester can be one of the most stressful times of the year, especially when midterm examinations roll around. But unlike the spring semester, students are given almost no reprieve from their studies until Thanksgiving.

Spring Recess gives students a much needed and sometimes hard-earned break from studying and everything else that comes with being hard-working university students. We are given the chance to go on a short vacation, drink like fish with our friends, or simply relax at home worry free. It is a week that we have all grown to love.

In the spring, we finish off those midterms and can breathe a collective sigh of relief that the semester is halfway over.

But during the dreaded fall semester, we finish up with mid terms and wake up on Monday morning right away, ready for even more classes. This can really wear some students down.

Thanksgiving break is just too little, too late. We return to school from turkey day with just a couple weeks to prepare for finals, term papers and the like.

The proper solution to the stressful problems that build up for students in the fall semester would be to implement a weeklong fall break.

The break could give students the chance to relax, go skiing or take some extra time to get their holiday shopping done. But more importantly, a break would be a reprieve from the sometimes painful midterm examinations.

Instead of seeing dog-tired zombies wandering the campus dreaming of Thanksgiving, we could see chipper, well-rested and well-adjusted students ready to tackle the second half of fall semester.

But the only way for this break to come to fruition would be to take a week away from either the summer or winter breaks. Our last winter break was almost too long so we feel that shortening it a little bit in favor of a week off during the fall would be optimal.

We are sure that the rest of the student body will join us in our quest for a week off in the middle of fall semester. We all enjoyed the break we just had didn't we?
