opinion: our view

New dorm rooms necessary

Cal State Long Beach's decision to create more dorm rooms out of the common rooms in Parkside Commons is the right decision for both current and incoming students. The only problem with the decision is how slow the university acted in notifying current residents.

Like it or not, the student population at CSULB is growing exponentially and students must realize that the university has a duty to at least try to accommodate incoming students.

Building completely new housing is a viable and necessary option but it would take much too long to plan and build new residence halls in order to guarantee housing to some new students.

Common rooms in dorm suites are somewhat important for students, but most of the things that students do in these common rooms, such as studying or hanging out, can be done in places outside the dorms like the library.

New students can't live in the library.

It is a shame that students have to lose the common rooms, which many rely on. But more importantly, we must all be able to welcome new students and give at least a few of them someplace to live.

It may be beside the point, but there are much more important issues that come up from the influx of new students. For example, all students at CSULB can expect an even more difficult time getting into the classes they need and finding a parking space.

Finding space for new students is a small step for the university to be taking, but it is only the first step. We hope that the CSULB administration is looking harder at the other problems that an increased student population brings to this campus.

The administration is starting to work on the problem, let's all hope that they will make some moves that will address the problems facing all students and not just new students.
