Letter
I am of the Navajo Tribe and was honorably discharged from
the U.S. Navy. While in the Navy I had the misfortune to be
called "injun," "chief," "redskin,"
"dog eater," "prairie nigger," "squaw"
and other derogatory names.
A "silly mascot" is not silly to me. Some "Americans"
seem to feel free to bash someone that fits the stereotype,
calling them "chief" or other things.
This "freedom" to bash American Indians is partially
caused by the romantic notions projected by the media of American
Indians as "stoic warriors."
The U.S government waged genocide on so many American Indians
that today less than 1% of the U.S. population is left.
American Indian mascots contributed immensely to racism that
I have experienced all my life. Please do not perpetuate outright
racism by printing American Indian mascots are "silly"
and not offensive. They are offensive and are destructive
to young American Indians.
