I attended the meeting on conflict in South Asia on April
10 that was sponsored by the Cal State Long Beach history
department. Stanley Wolpert, a professor of Indian history
at UCLA, defended the Pakistani government of President Pervez
Musharraf. He said that Musharraf is a supporter of the United
States. That is false. Musharraf has refused to turn over
the killers of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.
The Department of Justice has made three requests for the
extradition of the killers. The Pakistanis claim that the
killers will be tried in a Pakistani court.
The U.S. is about to give Pakistan $1 billion in economic
and military assistance. I think it is important for the U.S.
to make clear to Musharraf that the war on terrorism will
not be successful until all the killers of Daniel Pearl are
handed over to U.S. officials.
