Bush
must appease Arab nations or face consequences
Crown Price Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has met with President
Bush Thursday at the president's Texas ranch. Abdullah's visit
and disapproval of the United States' support of Israel shows
that Arab nations that were once close allied with the United
States may be walking away.
It is extremely important that Bush keeps on as good terms
as possible with Arab nations like Saudi Arabia, if only to
ensure that the importing of crude oil into the United States
is not stemmed off.
Bush's plan to begin drilling for oil in Alaska has been soundly
shot down in Congress and now his energy plan is stagnating.
As hard as it is for Americans to envision staying friendly
with nations that may harbor some terrorist, we still must
put our own needs at the front of the agenda.
Israel is still an important ally, but reports of late have
shown that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's tactics may have
been harsh in his occupation of Palestinian areas.
The majority of the Arab world is standing firmly behind Palestinian
leader Yasser Arafat and denouncing Israel and the United
States.
The time has come for Bush to wax diplomatic -- something
we hope is not a lost cause.
The fate of not only the Middle East but also the energy resources
of the United States lie in the decisions that President Bush
will make in the upcoming weeks. Arab nations hold a powerful
trump card over the United States with their vast oil reserves.
We think that Bush must bite the bullet and make these tough
decisions with the hope of ensuring not only peace in the
Middle East but the security of the United States.
Otherwise, the Arab world may take some drastic measures to
hurt the United States by stemming the flow of oil into the
United States. Bush must ask himself what is more important:
the security of the United States or the tenacious actions
of Israel?
