Women should think before they drink

I read an article in my local newspaper about college women and drinking. This is a growing phenomena fueled by young women who feel the need to measure up to men. With this phenomenon comes unplanned sexual activity, health problems and sometimes physical injury. This phenomenon was never so clearly evident as it was during my trip to Rosarito, Mexico. Maybe now I am a little older, wiser or just plain conservative, but my trip to Rosarito left me feeling disturbed.

Everywhere I turned I could see young women drinking themselves away. A club I attended offered a $20 "all you can drink" option upon entering, persuading the crowd to drink even more. What disturbed me was that no one was there to say " that's enough." I saw a young woman passed out and vomiting on herself and it was obvious no one knew what to do. The club employees really did not speak English, nor did they have any medical background. These clubs were like a free for all. Even the scummiest bars here at home have a bartender who's aware of how much a person has had to drink that night.

What also disturbed me is that most of the young women are pressured into drinking. I witnessed a contest between two women in which the winner was to be decided by whoever consumed the most alcohol. At the end, one woman passed out and was labeled a loser while the people around her poured their beer on her head as she lay on the ground.

I want to know why these young women think drinking each other under the table earns them a badge of honor? Especially if their competition is male! Why do we feel the need to prove ourselves in this area? Why do guys find it attractive if a woman can handle her alcohol?

I hope that all women who read this remember to drink wisely, consciously and never under pressure. It takes a stronger person to go against the current than to go with it. Drinking yourself into oblivion does not give you a higher status but rather it places you in a very vulnerable, dangerous position.
