VP, treasurer candidates lobby for spot

By Phil Witte
On-line Forty-Niner

Even though the positions lack the glamour and prestige of the race for Associated Students Inc. president, the positions of vice president and treasurer are both vital positions to the organization.

Among other duties, the vice president presides over the weekly A.S,I Senate meetings and the treasurer plays a major role in doling out thousands of dollars in student fees that go to campus student organizations every semester.

The three candidates for vice president are Konstantin Fedunin-Jarvis, Shahrokh Sheik, and Amber Smith.

Fedunin-Jarvis is a junior criminal justice major and the fundraising chair for Lambda Theta Phi.

He has no previous experience in student government, but said he wants to get involved in student affairs and promote stewardship among students.

Sheik is a senior international business major and the president of the Law Society.

"I want to open up the lines of communication between the students and A.S.I.," he said during last Wednesday's candidate's forum.

He also said he wants to enhance the efficiency and productivity of the ASI Senate.

Smith presented a detailed platform to students during last week's forum, based she said, on talking directly to students, she said.

"I want to improve the technology on the campus so we can enroll by computers, not just VRR," she said. "I want to increase environmental awareness by having more recycling programs, and I want to provide more money for study abroad programs."

The four students vying for the treasurer position are Ivette Montoya, Aristotle Tsekouras, Alejandro Negrete and Patrick Pendilla.

Montoya is currently the vice president for Associated Business Students Organization Council.

"If elected, I will help all student organizations and I believe my experience in other organizations can help me do this job," she said.

Negrete is a junior Chicano/Latino studies major and has been a senator from the College of Liberal Arts for three semesters.

"I want to try to help student organizations as much as I can and continue Rosa's [current A.S.I treasurer Hernandez] legacy," he said.

Pendilla is a junior political science major.

In his personal statement, he said he wanted to see that all funds are distributed to best benefit student organizations.

Tsekouras is a junior communications major and is currently A.S.I public relations commissioner.

He said he wanted improve communication between the treasurer's office and student organizations, and also to be the information center for all financial questions.

The elections continue through Wednesday at 8 p.m.
