Construction creates
congestion
By Joe Licavoli

The telecommunications
infrastructure project that started last week created construction
resulting in parking congestion and loud noise for classes
at Cal State Long Beach.
The project is a major upgrade to the voice and data networks
at CSULB and will be completed at every California State University,
said Scott Charmack,
associate vice president of Physical Planning and Facilities
Management
The telecommunications infrastructure system requires construction
to two new small main distribution facilities and the enlargement
of one existing main distribution facility. One of the new
facilities will be located across from Liberal Arts Building
1. The facilities will be used to hold electronics.
The majority of the buildings at CSULB will be re-wired with
new copper and fiber going throughout the facility, according
to the Facilities Management Web site.
"The three new buildings will cause a lot of trenching
to go on," Charmack said.
In addition to the construction, a major network of pipes
and wires will go around the perimeter of campus, according
to the Facilities Management Web site.
Spring break began the first week of construction as West
Campus Drive and the library parking lot was closed. This
week, the construction will be occurring on East Campus Drive.
This summer, students and faculty will see construction in
all of the parking lots.
"There's going to be a lot of work done. A fair amount
of it will be done at night," Charmack said. "We
try to focus on as many projects as we can in the summer."
All CSU campuses will be involved in the Telecommunications
Infrastructure Project, but CSULB was one of the first schools
chosen to begin the project, Charmack said.
"It was our willingness to go in the first wave,"
Charmack said, in regard to the main reason CSULB was chosen
to be one of the first CSUs in the project.
Facilities Management at CSULB is very busy with the telecommunications
infrastructure system but there are other projects that the
department is looking into to improve CSULB.
There is a fire alarm system going through all buildings on
campus and there are plans to complete a fine arts renovation,
Charmack said.
In addition, there are plans to build a new parking structure
in Lot 11 due to the increasing student enrollment at CSULB,
Charmack said.
"We are looking at a net 1,000 parking spots on the west
end of campus," Charmack said. "The parking structure
will not be state funded, so unfortunately parking fees will
need to be increased."
There are also plans for a student recreation center, which
is still in the planning stages, Charmack said.
