A.S.I. faces housing dilemma

By Adrienne Figueroa
On-line Forty-Niner

Housing and Residential Life came under fire at the Associated Students Inc. Senate meeting Wednesday for failure to give sufficient notice to student residents at Parkside Commons about construction that would reduce the size of their dorm suites.

Junior biology major and Parkside Commons resident Heidi Ramer spoke of her disappointment with the manner in which the housing office chose to inform residents of the change.

"They basically informed us when we got our contracts last week ... by giving us a map of the new outlook of the suites," Ramer said. "It's a rather big decision to make within a week whether you're going to find an apartment or whether you're going to stay in the dorms."

As her voice cracked, Ramer told A.S.I. about the feelings of other Parkside Commons occupants.

"We were really outraged by this," Ramer said. "A lot of students expressed very harsh opinions about what has been going on."

Stan Olin, interim director of Housing and Residential Life, explained that accommodation for the growing number of students who wish to reside in the dorms has been difficult. Currently, there are 1,827 bids for 18 buildings.

"The problem isn't going away," Olin said. "It's here to stay."

Elimination of "common" rooms -- areas designed for study or dining within individual suites -- would make more space available for the construction of additional bedrooms, Olin said.

A.S.I. Vice President Danny Vivian proposed to Olin that Housing and Residential Life create an "open forum for the students who live in housing to address the issues and concerns" to members of the department.

"I think that you will find a situation that could lead to collaboration and compromise, rather than a situation that might ... [be] a little more heated down the line," said Vivian to Olin.
