Society lays
down the law Graduate School Students

The Cal State Long
Beach Law Society has returned to cater to prospective law
school students who attend CSULB after lying dormant since
spring 1999.
The Law Society is a campus organization dedicated to helping
students become familiarized with law schools, the law school
application process, and the legal profession. The organization
welcomes any student who is considering law school and anyone
who finds interest in the legal profession.
"It's the best way a CSULB student can acquire knowledge
about law school," Law Society President Shahrokh Sheik
said.
However, before last semester, the Law Society lacked adequate
organizational leadership.
Last year's president of a year ago lacked the time to promote
the organization. Advertising and meetings became difficult
to coordinate with last year's executive board, so the club
was not all it could have been.
Last semester, then President Romel Lobo overcame the obstacles
of an uncooperative executive board and established a strong
foundation with a well-developed structure to serve its members.
"I took the president position to gain leadership experience,"
Lobo said. "I wanted to strengthen my law school application."
With the foundation settled, the Law Society is going big
this semester. The new faculty advisor, Arthur Levine, has
had roots with the organization since 1976. Under his
experience and leadership, the Law Society has gained the
guidance and know-how that is necessary for success.
Semester goals include serving its members by finding legal
internships and bringing in professional speakers who will
share their legal area of expertise.
Guests include Lisa Gear, director of Admissions at Southwestern
Law School, who will be speaking on the whole admissions process,
and Gill Hess, former Law Society president, who will be speaking
about how the Law Society geared him for success.
The group also seeks to inform students about the application
process, including deadlines, personal statements, and letters
of recommendation.
"Our group reaches out to the students in a major way,"
Sheik said.
Their reach encompasses helping students prepare for the Law
School Acceptance Test. This semester, in conjunction with
the students of the Law Society, Kaplan Test Corporation will
be offering LSAT test prep sessions. Being a member of the
Law Society allows for discounts on those prep classes.
Meetings are held in USU-307 on Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m.
