Music
lounge cranks up the sound waves
By Lyndsey Shinoda

Long before the
days of compact discs and mp3s, the Music Listening Lounge
played strictly vinyl. Located on the second floor of the
University Student Union, the lounge continues to thrive as
a place for tired students to seek refuge through music.
Lisa Molina-DelaLoza,
assistant director of USU services, said the lounge has been
in existence for more than 20 years, but many students are
unaware of its presence on campus.
"We used to have
close to 1,000 albums,” DelaLoza said. "It's still a
great place to hang out.”
The lounge boasts
live disc jockeys, individual listening booths, and two lounge
areas, which are accessible to Cal State Long Beach students
with a current identification card.
Most services are
free of charge, with the exception of the individual booths.
Renting one of five soundproof booths costs $1 per hour. The
booths contain speakers, CD players and headphones, DelaLoza
said.
"You can sleep, study, or take a friend in there,” DelaLoza
said. We'"ve seen everything.”
The lounge also
has a dark room equipped with 50 bean-bag chairs and 10 loveseats.
The walls are painted black, accompanied by black lights,
disco lights and neon wall decorations to set the mood. Student
DJs play music in the lounge, as per student requests.
"Usually all the
seats are packed,” DelaLoza said. "If students find
it's their comfort zone, they're there all semester.”
DJs have close
to 700 CDs to choose from at the lounge. DelaLoza said they
are not allowed to use burned CDs. She said the most popular
student requests are heavy rock, anything played on MTV, hip-hop,
and gangster rap. But jazz, country and easy listening may
also be inserted into the mix if one genre is dominating the
lounge.
When CDs aren't
requested as much, the lounge puts them on sale for students
for a mere $2 to $5.
The Music Listening
Lounge will be open starting Jan. 28. It is open from 8 a.m.
to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to
2 p.m.
