Haircuts, shampoos to improve campus dos'

By Christine Shin
Daily Forty-Niner

As the conscientious students we all are, sometimes we get so wrapped up in our studies that we forget about the daily or monthly chores we must upkeep, such as eating lunch or cutting our hair.

Thanks to Gary & Co., haircuts, or even a partial weave, are possible to squeeze in the hectic schedule of a student.

Located in the University Student Union, the full-service hair salon offers students, staff, faculty and alumni everything from a beard trim to a pedicure.

With at least five fully-licensed stylists on call every day, appointments are not required. Gary & Co. accommodates walk-ins for all those neglected grooming habits.

"With your face in a book all the time, you get so engrossed in your studies that you forget about the basic necessities,” said Kathy Abrams, stylist and manager. "It's nice to have somewhere right on campus where you can go during your break.”

Back in 1981, Gary Davis had a vision. At this time, there were no vendors on campus. But Davis saw the need for a hair salon in the university environment.

After one year of board meetings, the Cal State Long Beach alumnis, with the help of his business degree, opened Gary and Co. in 1982.

After 20 years, Gary & Co. continues to service the CSULB community.

"I feel like I'm in a time warp,” Davis said. "I'm the only one that gets older.”

The salon offers haircuts, beard and bang trims, perms, tints and weaves. Prices range from $15 for a haircut including shampoo to $35 and up for a tint to $70 for a whole-head weave.

From Bedhead to Joico, a wide selection of hair products are also offered with monthly sale specials. New to last fall, the salon now offers nail services.

Gary & Co. is open everyday except Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
