steps for recognition

On campus, the
accomplishments of Cal State Long Beach's dance department
may be unknown. Off campus, however, this award-winning depart-ment's
notoriety has reached as far as Canada.
For two consecutive
years now, the dance department has been named as one of the
top 10 university departments for undergraduate dance education
in a survey of dance department chairs in Canada and the U.S.-sponsored
Dance Teacher Now, according to the CSULB Web site. The dance
department has been accredited by the National Association
of Schools of Dance since 1982.
The first university
within the CSU system to offer a bachelor's degree in dance,
CSULB offers its 130 undergraduate dance majors and 30 graduate
students 90,000 square feet of space designed specifically
for dance instruction and production. The dance facility includes
the Martha B. Knoebel Dance Theater, seven dance studios,
along with a recording studio, student lounge, media center,
costume shop and even a sundeck.
Auditions for all
prospective freshmen and transfer dance majors or minors are
held three to four times each academic year. Students are
evaluated on their technical proficiency including alignment,
rhythm, articulation of spine and feet, qualitative range
and ability to accurately replicate movement sequences. Beginning
and low-intermediate (non-major) studio classes are open to
all students with no audition.
