Carpenter knows
Diddley and discounts
By Alex Roman

Those birds that
suddenly appeared in October of 1994 probably just wanted
to get closer to the Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing
Arts Center, which is located on Atherton Street.
In the last seven
years, the Carpenter Center has hosted numerous events that
have been associated with the campus as well as renting the
space to outside organizations.
During the spring
semester, the center will host another list of exciting events,
including Blues Unplugged VII, Spalding Gray and Rosemary
Clooney.
"Coming up this
semester we've got a couple of big things, most notably Bo
Diddley will be headlining our Blues Unplugged performance,"
said Bethany Price, director of marketing for the Carpenter
Center. "Jimmy Vaughn is also performing with him and Johnny
Johnson and Jodi Williams. So you are talking about one of
the best Blues Unplugged that's ever been seen. We've been
doing it for seven years so that's quite a line-up.”
Bo Diddley is a
legend who is almost always mentioned as a huge influence
on guitar players, particularly blues guitar players. Diddley's
visit is much anticipated and is just an example of the many
interesting acts that visit the center every year.
"Our Executive
Director Peter Lesnick goes to New York, Cambodia, Canada
and wherever to look at artists and he brings them in,”
said Price of the eclectic mix of shows. "He's met with the
Associated Students to talk what types of programming they
are interested in seeing. He talks with the different academic
departments, the music and the dance departments particularly,
and then he just finds stuff he thinks will be cool.”
What the Carpenter
Center is really excited about this semester is the offer
of student rush tickets for most shows. We "do have student
rush tickets for most of our performances, not all of them
but most of them and that means that students can get into
shows for $10 that sometimes cost as much as $35 or $45,”
says Price. "We're trying to spread the word to the students
but it's difficult because it's such a spread-out campus and
there's not one place that students go to for information.”
Student rush tickets
are available thirty minutes before the start of a show and
require cash and a student ID.
The Carpenter Center
also boasts the Carpenter's Museum, which is open daily from
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum offers visitors the chance to
see Karen's first drum set, Richard's first piano, Grammy
Awards and gold and platinum albums.
The center was
designed by Donald Gibbs, seats 1,079 people and is the home
of Musical Theatre West, The South Coast Chorale, Long Beach
Community Concert Association and the Long Beach Opera.
