Director earns 'Jurassic' honor

By Dwight Flenniken III
On-line Forty-Niner

Spielberg first attended CSULB in 1965, but left the university in 1968 to pursue a career in directing films, and the rest is history.

He fulfilled most of the requirements necessary to obtain a bachelor's degree during his first stint as a student.

He enrolled in the spring 2001 semester to complete the work he had left unfinished.

As of spring 2002, Spielberg had completed all the requirements for a degree in film and electronic arts, with an emphasis in film and video production. The work was completed through directed and independent study.

Robert Maxson, CSULB president, said he has great respect for Spielberg, and that his obtaining a degree sends a message to young people on the value of a university education.

Spielberg is best known for directing such movies as "Schindler's List," "Saving Private Ryan," "Jaws," "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," "Indiana Jones" and "Jurassic Park".

Along with David Geffen and Jeffery Katzenberg, Spielberg helped form the multi-media giant Dreamworks SKG.

He has also contributed his time to many charitable organizations. He founded the Righteous Persons Foundation with profits from "Schindler's List."

He also founded the Shoal Visual History Foundation. The Shoal Foundation's third film "The Last Days" won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

He currently serves as chairman of the Starbright Foundation, an organization aimed to help children suffering from serious illness.

"I wanted to accomplish this for many years as a 'thank you' to my parents for giving me the opportunity for an education and a career, and as a personal note for my own family  -- and young people everywhere -- about the importance of achieving their education goals," Spielberg said in a university press release. "Now I can eagerly look forward to joining the graduates at this year's commencement ceremonies."
