Library users need silence

By Kandace Hsu
On-line Forty-Niner

It's 9 p.m. and you have three finals to study for. You're sitting at your desk with your coffee and Red Bull next to you and your books neatly spread out. Your door is shut and just as you're about to start reading, your desk starts shaking as the bass of your roommate's oversized subwoofer shakes the entire apartment.

You try to ignore the thumping of the music, but it's useless. You can't concentrate over the ruckus.

Completely stressed and aggravated, you pack up your books and head to the campus library thinking you will have a quiet place to study.

After searching for the perfect place to settle down you open your book and begin to read. Just as you're getting into the reading material ... someone's cell phone goes off.

"I hate it when I'm trying to study in the library and someone's cell phone goes off," said senior, Joann Shen. "The worst part of it is when the person answers the phone and starts a conversation in the middle of the library."

Cal State Long Beach library rules dictate:

 • Cell phones and pagers should be turned off or put on silent while in the library.
 • Drinks should be in sealed, spill-proof containers. Snack foods that are not greasy are permitted. No other food items are allowed in the library.
 • All food and drinks are prohibited near library computers.
 • Food delivery to the library is prohibited.

According to CSULB students who study in the library:
 • Don't tap your pen excessively or drum your fingers on the table.
 • Don't chat with your friends.
 • Don't read out loud to yourself.
 • Don't shake the table.
 • Don't eat crunchy food or snacks that make a lot of noise.
 • Keep the volume of your portable music players low enough so that only you can hear the music.
 • Don't hog up the whole table. Put your stuff next to you and leave extra chairs for others to use.

The library hours for finals week are Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 1 a.m., Monday through Thursday 7:45 a.m. to 1 a.m., Friday 7:45 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 a.m.
