Extra escorts during finals week available

By Amanda Versluys
Special to the On-line Forty-Niner

Let's face it -- you're cramming late this week for finals. One thing you won't have to plan on is walking to your car late at night by yourself.

Community Service Officers will also be up late, waiting to safely escort last-minute crammers to their dorms or cars.

CSO, a program put together by University Police, offers CSULB students a secure alternative to late night walks through the campus alone.

A student can contact University Police at any time and be escorted by either a CSO or a University Police officer.

"Whenever I have to stay at school late, I have an escort walk me to my car," Robyn Gordin, an undecided major said. "I just feel safer having someone walk with me late at night."

Cal State Long Beach students can find these escorts in designated areas like the parking lots and the University Library. Students can identify the escorts by their distinctive yellow uniforms.

If a CSO is not in the area, a student can call for an escort by using any of the 200 emergency phones on campus. University Police may also be reached at (562) 985-4101.

If a student dials 9-1-1, he or she will be directly connected with the California Highway Patrol -- not the campus police.

"We provide 1,200 to 1,500 students with escorts to their car or dorm every week," said Sgt. Bonnie Myers, head of the escort service program.

Since the program began, University Police have received an increase in calls each year.

Twenty-five student escorts are on duty every night, Monday through Thursday, to provide security for students.

The CSO program is in cooperation with the Associated Students Inc., Parking Administration and University Police.

The escort service was developed in the 1990s by two criminal justice majors. University Police implemented the program a year later.
