Three
sororities try to join Greek system

The Cal State Long
Beach Greek system is in the process of becoming bigger as
three cultural sororities are looking to join the tradition.
Lambda Sigma Gamma, Sigma Theta Psi, and Sigma Lambda Gamma
recently presented their sororities to the Student Life and
Development committee. The committee, made up of faculty and
students, listened to all three national sororities. The sororities
had about 15 minutes to show why they would be a positive
addition to CSULB.
"We are checking the campuses they have already expanded
on," said Greek adviser Jeff Klaus. "We want to
know how their current process has gone, if they have followed
the rules, and if it has been an overall good experience for
the school and its students."
Currently, seven Greek letter organizations are at CSULB that
are not chapters of a national or campus coordinating council.
According to the Greek life Web site, these Greek letter chapters
are regional or national and are organized around a particular
culture or interest.
The cultural Greek letter organizations at CSULB-sponsored
service activities, educational workshops, social activities
and cultural programs.
All three sororities that are hoping to be a part of CSULB
stand for different beliefs, according to the San Jose State
chapter's mission statement. Lambda Sigma Gamma is a multicultural
sorority and, as such, believes in the value of diversity
and sisterhood. The sorority encourages diversity in culture,
majors and personal beliefs.
It is through the acceptance and understanding of other cultures
and lifestyles that Lambda Sigma Gamma seeks to become strong
and united.
The Sigma Theta Psi chapter at San Jose State is an academic
and social sorority. It is a unity of women that recognize
the trials of new and continuing students and is willing to
assist other women through such educational endeavors. Encouragement
is offered in every aspect of moral, academic and social support,
as well as developing life-long friendships.
The USC chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma believes its members
have recognized the need for togetherness and support among
women of all cultures at their universities and colleges,
and are dedicated to the overall success of women in the world.
While there is no set number on how many sororities can be
added to CSULB, current students had to show interest to even
go through this process.
"I think that adding three new cultural sororities to
campus is great," said current CSULB sorority member
Katherine Curry. "It gives girls more of an opportunity
to find the sorority that is right for them. In the long run
it just strengthens the Greek community as a whole."
The committee's forum was open to anyone who was interested.
"Many students showed up to voice their opinions,"
Klaus said. "After we heard the sororities presentations
the committee asked many questions."
The committee will meet today at 10:30 a.m. to make a decision
which of the sororities will be joining the CSULB Greek system.
