A
look into health issues
By Jeff Dusing

In today's world
of vast information, many Americans live their lives unaware
or unconcerned with the negative effects their actions will
have on their health.
From substance
abuse to poor eating habits and lack of exercise, Americans
are spending much of their time destroying their bodies, then
trying to find a way to correct the damage they have done.
This is the first
of a series of several health-related topics investigating
concerns from drug abuse to obesity to poverty.
The quality of
health care is not just limited by racial and economic boundaries.
In recent years, the need for gender-specific health education
has become apparent. Men's and women's health programs have
been popping up across the country, geared toward education
and awareness each gender faces.
Also featured today
is alcohol abuse among college-age students. Surveys have
found that up to 82 percent of college students have used
alcohol within the past year and about 69 percent within the
past 30 days.
In an annual survey,
7.4 percent of Cal State Long Beach freshmen admitted to drinking
frequently.
With these health
issues facing our society, what will our health be like in
the future? What can we do to ensure the health of our children
and grandchildren who are sure to inherit our traditions and
values?
Everyone knows
what it takes to lose weight, yet the problem continues. Everyone
knows that drug and alcohol abuse carries serious negative
effects, yet the problem continues.
In all, education
and discipline are the key. We must educate our children about
caring for their health and the importance of caring for the
health of others. We must demonstrate discipline in the things
we do and choices we make.
