Diversity
Expo breaks new ground

More than 1,000
students and alumni attended Thursday's Diversity Career Expo
at the University Student Union in search of jobs and career
opportunities.
Riding on the success of the Spring Job Fair, the Career Development
Center added new workshops and a mixer with employers.
"The expo was a really good success," said Robin
Lee, coordinator of the Co-op Education Program. "The
workshops were well attended and several employers and students
went to the mixer."
A diverse selection of companies was in attendance and offered
a number of options for job seekers. The expo was also an
opportunity for students to explore different career paths
and majors.
"I just wanted to go check it out," undeclared sophomore
Steven Hayes said. "There is a lot more career choices
out there than I thought. It definitely opened my eyes a lot
more to what's out there."
Companies like Target Stores, MTV and Southern California
Edison were a big draw for students, according to Lee.
In addition, employers wasted no time in scheduling interviews
with students.
"Two employers scheduled interviews the next day with
students," Lee said. "Several others are conducting
on campus interviews with students over the next couple of
weeks."
The Diversity Expo, which was the first of its kind at Cal
State Long Beach, was such a success that smaller and more
specialized events are being planned for next year.
Companies on hand also rated the students in attendance on
a scale of 1 to 5. With an overall rating of 3.52, the center
is very pleased with the outcome of the fair, Lee said.
The center also added the element of a mixer to the expo for
students to meet with employers and get acquainted on a more
personal level.
Several employers stayed for the mixer to meet with students
after the event, according to Lee.
Preceding the event were new workshops hosted by employers
rather than CSULB counselors to give a real-world perspective.
Many elements of the expo, due to their success, will likely
be integrated into future fairs, Lee said.
