May Day showed visibility

By Alexis Kindig
On-line Forty-Niner

Despite low student interest in information, Cal State Long Beach Labor Council volunteers trumped the International Day of the Worker barbecue Wednesday a success.

The barbecue was meant to show the labor council's visibility on campus, as well as celebrate May Day.

May Day is a day celebrating labor.

According to Donald Wright, a member of the California State Employees Association, around 300 burgers had already been sold by 12:30 p.m. No profit was made, but the council's purpose, exposing itself to students, was served.

Students were not as interested in the information tables.

Anne Stankewicz, of the California State Employees Association, said the barbecue usually features a speaker. The Labor Council decided against having a speaker this year, however, due to a historic lack of interest.

"It's hard to get people to pay attention" to the speakers, Stankewicz said. "It's more of a social thing."

Nevertheless, Jeanne Boyer of the Academic Professionals of California said her union's table had seen traffic from staff and faculty. Many people picked up a copy of the APC contract and bought themselves a burger and a Labor Council T-shirt, she said.

The contract was mainly picked up by new members so they could look it over.

Despite a lack of student interest in the union information tables, Mike Roth of the CSEA, who was helping to serve burgers, was pleased with the size of the crowd and the opportunity to get some visibility for the campus unions.

The groups represented by unions are the California State Employees Association, the California Faculty Association, the Academic Professionals of California, the State University Police Council, the State Employee Trade Council and the Union of American Physicians and Dentists.

Wright agreed, calling the event a "celebration of support from faculty, staff, and well-wishers."
