Burial
grounds off-limits

The ever-present
parking crunch that students face at the beginning of every
semester will be a little tighter next fall, as one of the
regularly-used run-off parking lots will no longer be used.
Starting next fall, the sacred Puvungna burial ground, between
Parkside Commons and the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden,
will no longer be used when all of the designated parking
lots and structures are full.
Eilene Cruz, president of the American Indian Student Council
was at Wednesday's Associated Students Inc. meeting to present
a resolution asking for the Senate's support.
The resolution acknowledges that, "during the first weeks
of both the fall and spring semester, Parking Services uses
Puvungna land to ease the overflow of cars on campus by parking
cars on the undeveloped land adjacent to parking Lot 20."
Citing congressional legislation, the California Public Resource
Code, and the National Register of Historic Places - which
has twice recognized Puvungna sites - the resolution asked
that Parking Services find alternate sites for overflow parking.
"[Cal State Long Beach President] Robert Maxson and Parking
Services Director Tom Bass have agreed in principle to honor
this," Cruz said. "This resolution is in support
of their decision and to provide information for the student
population at large."
The Senate will vote on the resolution at next week's meeting.
