CSULB labor unions will celebrate May Day

By Alexis Kindig
On-line Forty-Niner

The California State University Labor Council will celebrate May Day today with its sixth annual barbecue and raffle. The event will provide visibility for Cal State Long Beach's labor unions and funding for the Los Angeles Unified School District High School Collective Bargaining Institute.

The CSULB Labor Council is comprised of representatives from each of CSULB's six unions: the California State Employees Association, the California Faculty Association, the Academic Professionals of California, the State University Police Council, the State Employee Trade Council and the Union of American Physicians and Dentists, according to Anne Staskewicz of the CSEA.

The purpose of the event is "to show people there are unions on campus and that we're here to stick up for each other," according to Staskewicz. In the past, the unions have been involved in negotiations at the time of the event, Staskewicz said. The barbecue is serving as a way to get support for the unions.

In addition to $1 burger plates, $4 T-shirts and information tables, there will be a raffle to benefit the LAUSD High School Collective Bargaining Institute. The winner will receive half the proceeds, and the rest will go to the Bargaining Institute. The LAUSD High School Collective Bargaining Institute is an organization that teaches high school students about labor unions and how to negotiate contracts, according to Staskewicz.

Staskewicz says the event will be held today because May Day, now known as the International Day of the Worker, was the original Labor Day. In addition, she said, it is better to hold the event now than on the official Labor Day because everyone is still on campus.

Stakewicz anticipates a large crowd. "We always run out of food," she says, even though they buy for 350-360 people.

The barbecue will take place at the Speaker's Platform from 11:30-1:30.
