Martin Luther King
Jr. made huge contributions to civil rights, which is why
the 2000 + Bookstore at 309 Pine Ave. in Long Beach is honoring
him Thursday and Saturday.
The bookstore will have Memphis photojournalist Ernest Withers
speak at the store at 7 p.m. Thursday. Withers, who is noted
for his photos taken during the Black Civil Rights Movement,
will speak about his book, "Pictures Tell the Story:
Ernest C. Withers Reflections in History." Withers was
able to document his efforts before King was assassinated.
"Our emphasis is on education and community awareness
and that is recognized," owner Marie Deary said.
Withers' book is of photos from the Civil Rights Movement
that tell a story., Dreary said.
"He will be speaking about the pictures in his book,"
she said. "His book is a series of photography dating
from 1946 to present. He [is] still working though and still
documenting history of the Civil Rights Movement."
Withers has traveled with and photographed King, Medgar Evers,
Ralph Abernathy and James Meredith. He has photographed big
history moments like the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955, school
desegregation in Little Rock, Ark., and the assassination
of King .
On Saturday the store will have Alexs D. Pate, author of "Amistad,"
"West of Rehoboth" and "Losing Absolom."
He will be speaking, reading and signing books at 7 p.m.
Pate is the winner of the Black Caucus of the American Library
Association Inc. 2002 Literary Award.
