South Asia Day promotes understanding

By Kandace Hsu
On-line Forty-Niner

Consuls general from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be honored today at Cal State Long Beach's first South Asia Day.

"We want people to have a better understanding of the different countries that are clearly visible on our campus and to be better informed of the challenges and issues that South Asia currently faces," said Jyotsna Pattnaik, co-chair of the South Asia Committee.

South Asia Day events are from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Friendship Walk, which is located at the south side of the University Bookstore. Information booths for each country will be available for students to pick up brochures and food booths featuring South Asian cuisine also will be available.

At 3:30 p.m. a reception for the consuls general will be held on the second floor of the University Student Union in the Alamitos Bay Room. The reception is open for everyone who would like to join Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society in honoring and initiating the consuls general or a representative into the international honor society for scholars.

Following the ceremony, the consuls general or representatives will give  presentations  about their country, highlighting the challenges and current issues that are currently taking place.

The consuls were chosen by the country's government to head the emissaries that have been established in foreign countries. The consuls are diplomats or representatives of a particular country that deal with tasks such as issuing visas to allow travelers to visit their country.

The consuls general and representatives will be holding a panel discussion at 4 p.m. with a question and answer session to follow.

"The question and answer session will allow the students to ask the diplomats directly about the challenges and issues their challenges currently face," Pattnaik said.

The event is co-sponsored by the South Asia Committee, Asia and Asian American Studies Department, Center for International Education, College of Business Administration, College of Education, College of Liberal Arts, and Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society.
