Greeks raise big greens for charity

By Laurisa Franklin
On-line Forty-Niner

In an effort to raise money for charity, Greek Week kicked off with Greeks dressed in their best on Monday in the Long Beach Ballroom of the University Student Union.

The Greek convention consisted of lectures by Cal State Long Beach President Robert Maxson and Alpha Phi alumna Mary Peterson, who spoke on what it means to be Greek.

A panel with representatives from each Greek council answered questions about their respective organization.

"The lectures were wonderful," said Panhellenic President Kelli Jonkey. "There were so many people there, some people had to stand."

Philanthropy for the National Panhellenic Conference Vice President Sarah Deboer was in charge of getting all these events together.

"Greek Week is a way for all of Panhellenic and [Interfraternity Council] to raise money together and improve on our unity as a whole," she said.

The week, according to Deboer, is full of great events.

Tuesday, the Greeks celebrated with a barbecue at The Nugget. The money made from the barbeque is being donated to the Long Beach Unified School District.

Today, the week continues with Greek mixers. The individual fraternities and sororities come together to get to know each other better.

Thursday is the very competitive Greek sing, where different teams perform their representation of the Greek theme. The event, in which all money made will be donated to CSULB, will be held at 7 p.m. in Lindbergh Middle School.

The events end Friday night with the Starlight Charity Ball at the Sea Port Marina Hotel from 8 p.m. to midnight. This annual all-Greek formal will raise money for the Casa Youth Shelter in Cerritos.

Greek Week is a number of events designed to get fraternities and sororities together to raise money for good causes.

"It is the time when all the Greeks come together to raise money for a philanthropic cause," Jonkey said. "It helps to eliminate the different houses from being separate since all our organizations are geared towards raising money for good charitable causes."

The event takes a lot of planning, but all the Greeks are willing to help out for the cause.

"As Panhellenic president, Greek Week is an amazing time where I get to see all of the houses working together and it shows our unity and pride in giving back to our community," Jonkey said.

Jonkey estimates that the Greeks will raise $7,500 to donate to the different organizations and charities.
