50th special for debate team

By Alexis Kindig
On-line Forty-Niner

No argument about it -- the Cal State Long Beach forensics team will have extra reason to celebrate at its 50th anniversary festivities next month.

Forensics, as the debate team is also known, has won its first national championship ever and is looking forward to a bright future.

Over the past two months, team members have taken home three national championships.

Audrey Mink and Kristine Clancy won first place in the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence in March, where 30 of the top schools gathered to compete.

Mink also took the trophy for top speaker at the National Parliamentary Debate Association Championship that same month, and first place at the National Individual Events Tournament in April, where the CSULB team was ranked 14th overall.

At the end of the regular season, the team was ranked 8th in the National Parliamentary Debate Association.

According to the CSULB Forensics Web site, Mink and Clancy had earlier been named the top debate duo in the country, and the team as a whole was ranked 5th in the nation.

Susan Cereda was named an All-American at the National Individual Events Tournament and Sarah Stone and Heidi Raemer were given the same honor in policy debating.

"It's really rewarding after the time put in by the team and coaching staff," Mink says of the team's success.

All this success is good news for the team's, and the school's, future. The team's triumphs have gained them a national reputation, drawing students interested in debate to apply at CSULB.

"This is a really good opportunity for CSULB because students are beginning to come here specifically for the debate program," says Mink.

Matt Taylor, the debate program coordinator, is looking toward the future.

"We'll have lots of people coming in next year," says Taylor. "The younger members are ready to fill the gap" in leadership and skill left by the graduating seniors.

The debate program will hold its anniversary celebration on May 23 in the Pointe at The Pyramid.
