CSU police officers compete in relay

By Alexis Kindig
On-line Forty-Niner

A team of 20 California State University police officers will compete as one of 210 teams in the Baker to Vegas Cup Relay race this weekend, despite some difficulty with fund raising.

The race, sponsored by the Los Angeles Police Department, is an annual event that sends police officers from all over the United States and Canada on a 210 mile journey through the desert from Baker, a city nearly halfway to Las Vegas, to the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas.

The race is run in 20 legs, each officer assigned to one leg. According to the Team CSU press release, the teams are "divided into 11 categories based on agency size, gender mix, or age."

Team CSU will be in the 300 category, for agencies with 300 or fewer officers.

Along with the 20 officers actually competing in the race, 20 other volunteers will be sent as support staff.

The 40 members of Team CSU are from 10 CSU campuses: Long Beach, Dominguez Hills, Fullerton, Los Angeles, Channel Islands, San Jose, San Marcos, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Cal Poly Pomona.

Cal State Long Beach is sending staff members for the support team, though no University Police officers will actually be competing, said University Police Capt. Stan Skipworth.

Fund raising this year was rather difficult, according to Lt. Will Glen of San Marcos, captain of Team CSU.

The State University Police Association, which has sponsored the team in the past, did not provided funding for Team CSU this year, leaving it up to the team members to come up with the $1,300 entrance fee. Donations from individuals and businesses made it possible for Team CSU to pay for a support van and uniforms.

The police association had originally promised financial support, but the organization has not met in six months, Glen said.

This is the third year Team CSU has competed in the relay, which Glen describes as a "competition not just against each other, but against the elements." Team CSU competed in 1998 and 1999, coming in 18th and 19th, respectively, in its category.

Team CSU progress during the race can be followed on the Web site, www.csusm.edu/teamcsu.
