By Dwight Flenniken III
On-line Forty-Niner
The search for
a new dean at the College of Engineering has resulted in three
finalists who will interview at the campus all this month.
The search committee
has chosen Michael Mahoney, A. Essam Radwan and S.K. Ramesh
as the top candidates for the appointment of dean, which is
scheduled to take place by July 1.
Mahoney, a professor
at Cal State Long Beach, holds a doctorate in mathematics
with an emphasis in matrix theory. He visited the campus this
past weekend for a series of interviews with the Dean Search
Committee.
The committee has
scheduled Radwan's interviews for April 18 and 19. Radwan
is a professor at the University of Central Florida and holds
a doctorate degree in transportation engineering.
The final interviewee
is Ramesh. His interviews are scheduled to take place on April
23 and 24. Ramesh's doctorate is in molecular science, and
he is currently a professor at Cal State, Sacramento.
Ray Stephani of
the electrical engineering department serves as chairman for
the Dean Search Committee. Beth Ambols is the administrative
representative on the committee, and Ricardo Mendoza is the
student representative.
All other members
of the committee are from the College of Engineering, including,
Peter Cowan, Hamid Hefazi, Robin Ikemi, Shui Lam and Ray Wang.
"They have
a search protocol they need to follow," said Academic
Personnel Manager Irene Wood. "They have pre-approval
of how they are going to rate [candidates]."
The college has
154 full and part-time faculty, and has a student enrollment
of more than 3,000.
The new dean will
act as the chief academic officer for the college. He will
be expected to facilitate public-private sector partnerships
and increase funding for the support of the college.
