By Kandace Hsu
Daily Fory-Niner

Gary Reichard was appointed on Thursday the position of provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs at Cal State Long Beach.

Reichard will succeed Karl Anatol on July 1 and will continue the provost duties of overseeing budget and strategic planning, allocation of classrooms as well as every office that serves students.

"I'm really looking forward to adding and building on to the great staff and faculty we have here," Reichard said.

His major priority will be enrollment, particularly the new admissions standards set to take effect next year.

Reichard's next priority is recruiting and retaining faculty.

CSULB President Robert Maxson was happy with the choice.

"After a lengthy nationwide search, it was clear that our best candidate is already here," Maxon said of the appointment in a press release. "Gary Reichard will come into the position with a breadth of experience combine with a true concern for the academic future of this university, a sensitivity toward the needs of faculty and an honest affection for out students. We could not have done better."

Reichard came to CSULB in 1994 and is currently associate vice president for academic affairs in charge of overseeing academic personnel, planning, and assessments.

Reichard's resume includes working as associate vice chancellor of Academic Affairs for the University of Maryland systems and director of the honors program at the University of Delaware.

Reichard was also professor before serving as dean of undergraduate studies, and chair of the history department at the Schmidt College at the Florida Atlantic University in Florida.

He studied at the College of Wooster, where he earned his bachelor's degree before continuing to Vanderbilt University for his master's degree and a Ph.D. from Cornell University. Riechard has written many books, articles, encyclopedia entries and book reviews.
