A.S.I. flies high with kite-building for charities

By Laurisa Franklin

From dart throwing to dunk tanks, Associated Students Inc. will host a carnival today to allow clubs and organizations on campus to raise money for charities.

"The carnival is a chance to allow clubs on campus to raise money for good causes," said Chris Dollar, A.S.I. executive administrator. "A.S.I. will be charging low prices so everyone can participate."

The carnival will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and fun prizes will be provided for the kids.

Dollar said that A.S.I. provided the games, prizes and opportunities for the organizations. The organizations are in charge of volunteers, gathering participants and having fun. Some of the organizations involved are fraternities and sororities, the Latin Student Union, The College of Natural Sciences and the Human Resource Management Association. All will be raising money for individual charities.

Along with the carnival, A.S.I. will also hold a kite building event. The proceeds raised will be donated to help save abused animals in the city of Long Beach.

Gina Garcia, A.S.I. community service commissioner, explained that the event is being held to make kids aware of how to help the community."

"We chose kites to represent soaring into success," Garcia said, "We want to educate kids about the importance of going to college and the community."

The kites will cost $3 and all proceeds will be donated. The booth is run strictly by volunteers who are welcome to join in the activities at any time.

A.S.I. is looking forward to a good turnout. The carnival and kite building booth is an opportunity for the community to work together while helping out some great causes.
