Homecoming 2002

In an eventful overtime basketball game on ..., the Long Beach State Men's basketball team claimed their Homecoming game event with an 83-80 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

The Game

The Cal Poly Mustangs lead the game in the first half, but were challenged after half time as the 49ers kept up with a point by pointpoint-by-point battle. With seconds left the 49ers scored tyingtied the game at 75 points. The five minute overtime seemed to last for hours. In the end, the 49ers dominated. Those Tailgaters

The Homecoming day's events began with a tailgate party in the Pyramid parking lot, attended and sponsored by. Mmoore than 25 clubs and organizations drove their cars onto the lot to house their own tailgate parties. With cars, tables, chairs and barbecues, some clubs seemed to bring everything but their kitchen sinks. The highlight had to be a dunk tank, which was rented by one of oura campus fraternity. fraternities.

The Administrative Perspective "Successful Event"

Chris Dollar, the Associated Students Inc. Executive Administrator, thought the pre-party was a successful event.
"I was very pleased with the student participation. The actual tailgate portion was a groundbreaking event that had such a strong turnout. Everyone really behaved and most of all had a good time."

Those Fun Games

Alumni Association, A.S.I. Government and President Scholars shared the remaining parking lot with a variety of activities. A.S.I.'s Government's featured a variety of competitions, such as a water balloon toss and a whipped-cream eating contest. The bestOne of the most popular events was had to the "Go Beach Marshmallow eating contest," in which." Each contestant had to stick marshmallows in their his or her mouth and then attempt to say "Go Beach." Tyrone Robertson won the game with 23 marshmallows in his mouth.

Other chart toping events featured The Superslide, a rock climbing wall, and an oversized boxing ring.

The Tailgate Program

With anAn hour before the game, Adam Clark, the ASI Sport and Sprit Commissioner, who was in charge of the tailgate event, took the stage for a pre-game program. The PAC dance group began the show with an upbeat co-ed dance program.

What tailgate would be complete without the Dance Team or the Cheerleaders? Both teams helped to pump up the crowd with their enthusiastic perreformances. The Royalty

The program concluded with ASI President Wayne Stickney-Smith and Ria Superville, Senator for College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, introducing the 2002 Homecoming Court, Homecoming King Josh Edrington, and Queen Rosa Hernandez. This year, 8 eight women competed for Homecoming Queen, while 5 five men fought for King.  The announcement of declared royaltythe winners was not made until half time.

One of the princesses, Bethany Rausch had her opinion about postponing the decision about who the queen and king were. "I was so nervous, I just really wanted to know. A Spirited Game

3,401 people piled into the pyramid to watch the 49ers beat Cal Poly. With Beach Pride in the aAir, the fans cheered the way to victory. ASI President Wayne Stickney-Smith was impressed with the attendance.

"The significance was that the students came out in force. All student areas were filled to capacity. We call our spectators the 6th man. The 6th man helped our team become super human. The team came from behind to get it in overtime,." he said.

Royalty Declared

A little unintended moment of suspense was added to the crowning of the new Homecoming King and Queen, when the envelope announcing the new queen got misplaced. It the end, President Maxson came to the rescue with the missing envelope with Rosa Hernandez's name.

Last year's royalty When half time arrived the court was called to center stage to hear the verdict. Last year's royalty, Amy Wiedeman and Mike Braga passed on the reign to the new King and QueenJosh Edrington and Rosa Hernandez. The announcement came easy for the king. Wayne opened the envelope and introduced Josh Edrington. Then the time came for the Queen. Wayne and Ria each looked at each other hoping the other person had the envelope, neither one did. The envelope was missing and the girls were growing more nervous by the second. Then President Maxson came to the rescue. He wanted to introduce the new Queen. As the girls took deep breathe in, the envelope was opened and Rosa Hernandez heard her name as the new Queen.
