Student filmmakers strut at the Carpenter

By Joe Licavoli
On-line Forty-Niner

Cal State Long Beach film students will show off their hard work, dedication and talent at the annual spring filmmaker showcase, Saturday at the Richard and Karen Carpenter Center at 8 p.m.

The showcase is an opportunity for film students at CSULB to show off all their hard work, said film major Blanca Sanchez.

"Long Beach doesn't get the recognition it deserves. The showcase is to show what we can do and what we're capable of doing," Sanchez said.

The films range from melodrama to experimental to comedy. There's even a thriller, Sanchez said.

The showcase, sponsored by the film department at CSULB, is a part of the film production option, Sanchez said.

"[The directors are] selected through the staff of the film department," Sanchez said.

The film department has several levels: beginning, intermediate and advanced. The students that have their films in the showcase are from the advanced and advanced one classes. The advanced classes films last approximately 12 minutes and the advanced one classes films are the same length of time but are bigger because they often have more people involved in the film Sanchez said.

Ten short films are involved in this year's event, Sanchez said.

"Each film has their own crew, one film had a director who did everything. There are ten directors and there can be 10 to 20 people in a crew for each film," Sanchez said.

The spring showcase is bigger than fall because it is in the Carpenter Center. In the fall semester, the showcase is held at the University Theatre, where film students recruit people to work on the showcase.

Audience attendance has been increasing as the semesters pass.

"Last fall was the first time we sold out the University Theatre, which holds 500 people, Sanchez said. "We had to turn people away."

With the response from the fall showcase, the expectations are high for a good turnout Saturday, Sanchez said.

"Long Beach doesn't get the recognition it deserves. The showcase is to show what we can do and what we're capable of doing," Sanchez said. "We put out posters and flyers all around Long Beach and there was a press release also sent out."
