Orkestral
grooves

Long Beach's Orkest
brought their brand of rock to the South Terrace of the University
Student Union yesterday and kept the audience of approximately
50 people captivated for the entire 45-minute set.
Singer Rolando Mora, bassist Greg Martinez, drummer Kevin
Jordan and guitarist Eric Gonzalez played riff heavy rock
reminiscent of Tool, Deftones and Incubus while dancer John
Cooley showed off his moves while dancing barefoot with black
body paint with orange stripes covering him from head to toe.
Mora's stage presence, combined with Jordan's hard hitting
performance, kept the usually passive lunch crowd focused
on more than just lunch.
Martinez's smooth but heavy grooves were complimented well
with Gonzalez's intricate guitar technique. Gonzalez later
played samples on a nearby keyboard, adding a nice touch to
the song.
While the band admits their practice place is far from ideal,
yesterday's show was tight and put together well.
"The bathroom (at the practice place) is like a dungeon,"
Jordan said.
"Actually, the whole studio is a bathroom," Gonzalez
said.
In their three-and-a-half years existence, the band as played
famed Hollywood clubs such as the Roxy, the Whisky, the Coconut
Teazer and the Troubadour, along with numerous places in an
area Martinez described as "the 909."
Whereas many bands' futures are unclear, Mora says the band's
plans are quite simple.
"Take it all the way," he said.
