'Cigarette
Girl' lights up pages
By Alisha Gomez
On-line Forty-Niner
In today's times,
dating is confusing -- a mixed-up whirlwind that engulfs single
people of all ages.
The guy that likes
the girl is not the one the girl wants. Or the girl likes
the guy and she is not "his type"; there seems to
always be some complicated issue when getting involved with
someone, right?
Just ask Elizabeth
West, a smart 28-year-old screenwriter in Los Angeles, who
has given up on Mr. Right and is on the search for Mr. Maybe.
"The Cigarette
Girl," a book by Carol Wolper, is a hilarious, modern
day story about finding love in a scene filled with gorgeous
bimbos and the guys who drool after them.
One of the most
liberating things about the book is that Wolper's main character,
West, is not typical.
She'll have a one-night
stand and not worry about what the guy will think of her the
next day. West is fearless in her sexual endeavors and she
is an inspiration to women to stop comparing themselves to
the "size 2 female" and stop being so polite and
unassertive.
There are so many
funny moments in the book with West, her friends and her job
as an action film screenwriter working in a male-dominated
career. Wolper has West write brief versions of script throughout
the book to show the comedy in a specific situation.
Wolper has created
a character that all women can identify with because even
though West does what she wants, she still feels. West is
completely real and does not give into society's views of
women.
Between her secret
lust for her boss and bumping into ex-boyfriends, females
across America will be able to relate to West's experiences
and go through them with her again.
A must read book
for those of us who have ever contemplated giving up on the
whole love scene, "The Cigarette Girl" gives vision
to life beyond college and hope us all.
