The Long Beach State women’s volleyball team remains undefeated, after taking down both the University of San Diego Toreros and the University of South Carolina Gamecocks this weekend.

“The key to winning is to score the last point and play with better style,” head coach Brian Gimmillaro said.

Elisha ThomasLBSU senior Brittany Hochevar had another amazing night against South Carolina after posting her second triple-double this week with 10 kills, 44 assists, and a season-high 12 digs. She helped the 49ers win 30-21, 20-30, 30-25, 30-20 Saturday night at The Pyramid.

The Beach (8-0) started off strong in game one with a .326 hitting percentage, while keeping South Carolina to a .125 hitting percentage. LBSU junior Raimi Mitchell posted five kills.

South Carolina (6-3) came back in game two and tied the match with solid contributions from senior Berna Dwyer’s five kills and Cally Plummer’s four kills and four digs. The Gamecocks kept the 49ers at a mere .028 attack percentage.

However, LBSU rebounded quickly in game three with the help of sophomore Kessie Doering, who registered six kills, while senior Tracy Bulquerin helped defensively with four digs.

“We’ve had good contribution from the experienced players, and surprising contribution from the new players,” Gimmillaro said.

The Beach defeated San Diego (6-2), 30-28, 29-31, 30-23, 31-33, Thursday night before a home crowd of 1,843.

The two teams had a fairly even team attack percentage in game one — the 49ers with .173 and the Toreros with .162.

But, in game three, LBSU took the edge behind Hochevar’s nine assists and Bulquerin’s five digs. The team hit .270 while keeping USD down at a .105 hitting percentage.

Hochevar added five kills, 15 assists, and four digs in game four to end the night with a triple-double (11 kills, 52 assists, 10 digs).

“Brittany is probably the best all- around player,” Gimmillaro said. “She’s an amazing setter and hitter.”

The Beach hit .374, while holding San Diego to a .277 hitting percentage.

The Toreros had a solid night from freshman Lindsey Sherburne who had a match high 58 assists and .600 attack percentage. Sophomore Devon Forster finished the night with a match-high 20 kills and 16 digs.

The 49ers will be back in action in an exhibition game against the Czech Republic Club Team Monday night at 7:30 in The Pyramid.
