Soccer ties OSU at home

The Long Beach State women’s soccer team narrowly avoided their fifth consecutive loss of the season Friday, tying Oregon State, 1-1, at George Allen Field.

The 49ers (0-4-1) tied the game with six minutes to play with a goal from senior forward Sarah Gamet after junior forward Abie Curry’s shot was deflected by Beavers’ goalie Jo Fletcher.

The Beach controlled almost the entire game and kept the ball on the OSU side of the field for the majority of the match. The score was tied 0-0 at halftime but the Beavers (2-1-1) changed that when Stacey Mescher scored at the 52:05 mark, giving OSU a 1-0 lead.

LBSU kept the pressure on but did not have much luck on the offensive end until Gamet scored her first goal of her career. The final few minutes were intense, but neither team scored.

The two overtime periods were played much like regulation, with the exception of OSU seemingly turning up the offensive pressure a bit. Ball possession was a bit more balanced than regulation and every shot drew a gasp from the crowd, but neither team could find the back of the net.

Gamet said her goal was important to her team’s struggling offense.

“We are a team that can’t really finish much,” Gamet said.

Opportunities for goals have been there, Gamet said, but they still have had difficulties scoring, but she thinks this will change.

“We’re getting the ball in the air instead of relying on the forwards,” Gamet said.

The 49ers’ strategy is to win the ball in the air, something they have been practicing, sophomore forward Kristin Travis, said.

“If we win the ball first, then we can have a better chance of controlling the game,” Travis said.

“We were much more physical today,” Gamet said, “and we won more head-balls.”

Friday’s performance made LBSU head coach Peter Reynaud happy and hopes the tie is something the team can build on for the rest of the season.
