The
49er men’s golf team is preparing for one
of the year’s biggest tournaments at one
of the United States’ most storied golf
courses — the Inverness Intercollegiate
Golf Tournament, which is held at the Inverness
Club in Toledo, Ohio, next Monday and Tuesday.
“The Inverness tournament will probably
be one of the three strongest fields of
the year—It will probably have 7 of the
top 10 teams,” head coach Bob Livingstone
said.
Next weeks tournament is an opportunity
for the golfers to play the private course,
which has been the site of three U.S. Open
tournaments, including the 1920 tournament
and most recently in 1979. The course was
also the site of the 1993 PGA Championship,
another of the grand slam tournaments. Golf
courses used in major professional events
tend to be difficult and the 49ers may find
Inverness to be no exception.
In addition to the course difficulty, the
49ers must prepare for one of the most talented
fields in college golf. The tournament was
cancelled last year due to the tragic events
of Sept. 11.
Livingstone has yet to choose which of his
10 golfers are best suited to compete at
Inverness, but he will decide according
to the golfer’s performance in past tournaments
and practice this week.
When asked what the Inverness tournament
will mean for the development of the team,
Livingstone said, “We will certainly see
if we are close, or how much we need to
improve to compete with the top ten or twenty-five
teams. It will show us really where we rank
and how much we need to improve.”
Last weekend, the 49er golfers competed
in the Badger Invitational where they placed
13th out of 15 teams. The tournament, at
the University Ridge Golf Course, saw sophomore
Ryan Plummer finish 30th among 75 golfers,
to claim the top place for the 49ers.
Plummer was followed by seniors Tyler Mays
(46th), Nick Seymour (52nd), Robert Sul
(69th), and sophomore James Logeman (71st).
Mays had the lowest scoring round for the
49ers, shooting a 68 in the second round.
