Women’s soccer falls in a two close-call games

By Ryan Ritchie

The Long Beach State women’s soccer team came within a matter of minutes of winning two games this weekend in the Boilermaker Challenge Cup in West Lafayette, Ind., but finished with a pair of losses.

The 49ers (0-4) got off to a rough start before Sunday’s game against University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee began. Lightning delayed the match 45 minutes prior to the start and again for 45 more minutes near the 60-minute mark of the game.

LBSU freshman Laura Kucich scored on a pass from teammate Amy Leipham to give the Beach a 1-0 lead at the 38-minute mark. UW Milwaukee tied the game at the 55:15 mark when Maggie Suminski scored from 30 yards out.

When the game resumed from the second lightning delay, UW Milwaukee player Janice McGann put back a missed shot off the cross bar at the 64:13 mark to put the Beach down for good. Suminski sealed the victory for UW Milwaukee when she scored again at the 79-minute mark.

Saturday’s game was smoother for the 49ers but still resulted in a loss. The match was scoreless until the University Purdue’s Jennie Hoppert scored the only goal at the 70-minute mark, preserving a victory for the Boilermakers.

Twenty-eight fouls were committed by both teams, in addition to four yellow cards between the two squads.

LBSU’s Marissa Barragan was forced to leave the game at the 38-minute mark after re-injuring her left knee, a problem that caused her to miss all of last season. All-Big West player Diana Sanguinetti made her return to the team and played the entire second half.

Lauren Doffing was the 49ers only selection to the all-tournament team. Host team Purdue won the tournament.
