The
49ers had their third loss of the season
on Sunday at The Pyramid, and although the
game was a close one, the Beach lost to
the Florida Gators, 72-69.
The first several minutes of the game were
back and forth, though Florida (4-1) was
unable to score a field goal for the first
seven minutes.
Sarah Stout nailed a close-range basket
to propel The Beach (1-3) to 13-2 advantage,
and Jinga Gosschalk then scored a three-pointer
to cushion the lead further.
However, the Gators then went on a 16-6
run, highlighted by Danielle Santos’ two
jump shots to trim the lead to 22-18. The
half ended with Florida leading 39-34.
In the second half, neither team was able
to lead by more than three points, until
Florida’s Dalila Eshe increased the Gators’
lead to 60-54. Kelly Stevenson scored a
three-pointer with just under five minutes
left in the game to secure a comfortable
63-59 advantage for the Gators. Florida
ended the game with a three-point victory,
72-69.
Despite the loss, the 49ers came away with
two career bests. Candice Wilson scored
16 points, the most of her career so far,
and Glory Johnson topped her old record
with 16 rebounds.
Last Wednesday, the 49ers lost their first
road game of the season to Eastern Washington
(1-1), 62-49.
The Beach will be on the road again, heading
to Florida for the Stetson Hatter Classic
on Friday and Saturday.
