Women’s hoops beat Aggies with three-pointers

The 49ers women’s basketball team reeled in its first win of the season in its second try Monday night at The Pyramid, beating the New Mexico State Aggies, 78-67.

Long Beach State (1-1) poured in nine three-pointers, the second most in school history.

Seven of the three-pointers were scored in the first half, contributing to the Beach’s 18-point lead at halftime.

The 49ers started off strong, sprinting ahead to an 8-0 advantage in the first few minutes of the game.

Glory Johnson Christina Mack, Glory Johnson, Jinga Gosschalk and Lauren Bull all scored three-pointers in the first half to boost LBSU to the big lead going into the half.

Bull scored the last points of the first half, which was another three-pointer, to up the score to 44-26.

Immediately after, Bull was knocked down and injured, and did not return to the game because of soreness in her neck.

In the second half, the Aggies (1-1) managed to come within five points, 54-49, but the LBSU quickly widened the gap with the help of two more three-point shots.

Freshman forward Deja Blevins earned her first points as a 49er with two free throws to secure The Beach’s 78-67 victory.

Senior forward Glory Johnson led the team with 19 points and seven rebounds, while dishing out nine assists.

Sophomore guard Candice Wilson scored a career-high 14 points for The Beach, and also grabbed three rebounds and distributed nine assists.

For the Aggies, Princess Moore scored 31 points, a career high, along with tallying five rebounds and two assists.

Sinnamon Garrett was second in scoring with 14 points and eight rebounds for New Mexico State.

The LBSU women’s basketball team will be on the road against Eastern Washington on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and return to The Pyramid on Sunday at 2 p.m. to play Florida.
