Women’s
hoops lose to USD

After
a long and physical struggle in The Pyramid,
the Long Beach State women’s basketball
team lost its first game of the season to
the University of San Diego Toreros on Saturday,
73-58.
USD started the game with a three-pointer
from Marie Plocher, and never gave up the
lead.
In the first half, San Diego brought their
lead to as many as 20 points (36-16) before
the 49ers sliced the deficit to 38-26 at
the half.
The 49ers continued playing with that resilience
in the third quarter.
In a very physical second half, characterized
by dropped and stolen balls, fouls, slips
and falls, and an injury to a 49er, The
Beach managed a 14-point run to close the
gap, and then tied the score at 40-40 after
a three-pointer from sophomore guard Candice
Wilson.
But the rally was not enough, however, to
keep the Toreros from finishing the game
with a 15-point lead. Although the 49ers
out-rebounded the Toreros, they couldn’t
make good on their shots often enough.
The Beach’s Glory Johnson, a senior forward,
turned an ankle in the second half and had
to sit out for the remainder of the game.
Wilson led the Beach in scoring with 13
points. Lauren Bull Jayme Connors, and Christina
Mack, who fouled out late in the second
half, each added 11 points.
Erin Malich was the Toreros’ top scorer
with 19 points. Polcher contributed 13,
and Kerri Nakamoto scored 11 points for
USD.
In addition, he 49ers played New Mexico
State at The Pyramid Monday evening, and
the results from that game will be in Wednesday’s
edition of the On-line Forty-Niner.
