Wilson scores 19 in 49ers’ victory

Sunday’s exhibition game at The Pyramid deserved a larger crowd.

The 49ers came from behind to beat traveling exhibition team Love and Basketball in the second half, 77-68.

The crowd was small and subdued, but the Long Beach State women’s basketball team played enthusiastically.

Candice WilsonCandice Wilson, a sophomore guard, and Jinga Gosschalk, a senior forward, both scored three-pointer shots in the first half, but it was not enough to keep Love and Basketball from leading at halftime, 32-40.

Wilson led the team in scoring, with 19 points. Sophomore center Jayme Connors and Lauren Bull, a junior forward, were second and third with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Also, senior forward Glory Johnson grabbed seven rebounds.

Early in the second half, the 49ers started closing in on Love and Basketball after Gosschalk, who was playing with a black eye sustained in practice, made a free throw to narrow The Beach’s deficit to 46-42.

A short while later, another free throw by Connors and a subsequent basket by Lauren Bull finally put LBSU ahead, 48-46.

From that point, the 49ers never looked back.

Although Love and Basketball managed to score three three-pointers in the second half, the team was unable to get within less than two points of the 49ers. Love and Basketball is a semi-pro team made up of ex-college players.

With the score at 74-68, Wilson manged to elicit an enthusiatic response from the spectators as she threw yet another three-pointer that barely beat the buzzer to finish off the game.

The women’s team will play the University of San Diego next. The game will be at The Pyramid at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
