The
Long Beach State women’s volleyball team
will play back-to-back games against the
UC Irvine Anteaters on Friday at Irvine
and Saturday at The Pyramid.
The
49ers dropped to No. 10 in the latest rankings
released by the American Volleyball Coaches’
Association, despite the successful road-trip
last weekend.
Senior Elisha Thomas joins Benishe Dillard
in the 49ers single-season record book at
the No. 10 all-time for most block assists
with 119 after The Beach defeated the University
of the Pacific and Cal State Northridge
last weekend.
Thomas needs seven more block assists to
pass No.5 Vicki Pullins, who had 125 in
1989. Thomas also joins Nique Crump and
Stacy Peoples at No. 3 all-time for most
block assists in a single-match.
Brittany Hochevar currently ranks No.1 in
the Big West Conference with 43 aces and
passed Vicki Simons for No.3 all-time on
the Big West career-aces after recoding
two services aces versus UOP and CSUN. Hochevar
also holds the league record with five triple-doubles.
As a team, the 49ers recorded 33 block assists
against CSUN on Thursday, the sixth-highest
total in the program’s history. The Beach
also had a season-high nine service aces
against UOP on Saturday night.
LBSU (22-3, 11-3) has won 35 consecutive
matches over UCI since 1985 and have swept
the Anteaters 13 consecutive times since
1995.
This will be the first time the 49ers will
face the Anteaters this season.
In addition, UCI (15-9, 8-6) reached 15
wins for the first time since 1993 against
Cal State Northridge last weekend.
The Anteaters should challenge The Beach’s
stifling defense with their potent offensive
attach. UCI rank No.2 in the Big West in
hitting percentage at .283 due to strong
play all season from sophomore Kelly Wing
who leads the league with 5.48 kills per
game.
UCI has also had solid contributions from
setter Ashlie Hain, who became UCI’s all-time
season assist leader with a 53-assist performance
last weekend to total 1,216. Also, Chanda
McLeod had 11 kills and 12 digs in the last
game for her 15th double-double for the
Anteaters.
