The
rain wasn’t the only thing soaking the Bruins.
On Friday at the Sunset Canyon Recreation
Center, the No. 9-ranked 49ers defeated
the host second-ranked UCLA Bruins, 6-5.
UCLA’s record falls to 10-7 and 2-4 in Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation action, while
the 49ers improved to 14-15 and 2-6 in MPSF
play.
The 49ers started the game with a strong
lead, never letting their sight off the
competition.
The score was 3-0 after the first period
in which sophomore Erik Geoffroy fired two
shots into the net for the 49ers.
UCLA struggled in the opening minutes of
the second half, allowing the 49er to claim
a narrow 4-3 advantage behind goals from
Bruins Matt Flesher and Michael March.
In the waning moments of the third period,
Long Beach State struck again with two ticks
left on the clock as senior Kellyn Carlson
hurled in his only goal of the game, propelling
The Beach to a 5-3 lead.
During the final period, UCLA’s Peter Belden
scored at the 6:08 mark to slice the Bruins’
deficit to 5-4.
However, the 49ers responded with another
goal from Geoffroy less than a minute later.
In addition, freshman goalie Thomas Onyshko
tallied 10 saves on the afternoon.
The victory over the Bruins broke a 20-game
losing streak to UCLA. In fact, the last
LBSU win over UCLA came during the 1992
season, with an 8-7 win at Belmont Plaza
Pool.
Other scorers for the 49ers included junior
Jason Palda, and senior team captain Aaron
Holloway.
On Wednesday night, however, the Beach fell
to UC Irvine in a 10-5 MPSF loss to the
Anteaters at the Joint Forces Training Base.
The 49ers will return to action on Saturday
at noon with a road game against Pepperdine.
