Beach saves its best for 49er Classic

In its best showing at a tournament this year, the 49er men's golf team beat five Big West Conference opponents and finished seventh in the 12-team field.

The Beach hosted the seventh annual 49er Collegiate Classic at the Southern California Professional Golfers' Association Champions Course last Thursday and Friday in Calimesa.

Bobby Powers of San Jose State won the individual title, shooting a three-round score of 209--68, 72, 69. Long Beach State golfer James Logeman finished 13 strokes behind Powers, tying for 23rd.

James Logeman Finishing after Logeman for the 49ers were Chris Gilley in 27th, Torey Edwards in 31st, Ryan Plummer in 35rd and Nick Seymour in 45th place.

Head Coach Bob Livingstone was pleased with the overall performance of the team but said the team still must improve consistency and eliminate sporadic high scoring holes during rounds.

The University of Arizona's junior varsity team took the team title shooting 869--288, 298, 283. Although the Arizona team was named a junior varsity squad, the team included some of the school's top golfers.

North Texas, San Jose State and UC Riverside rounded out the top four, while the 49ers finished 22 strokes behind Arizona in seventh place.

Tournament wins over conference opponents are important to qualify for the playoffs, and the 49ers beat conference foes UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, University of the Pacific, Idaho and Cal State Northridge.

Long Beach State would normally host the tournament at home course Virginia Country Club, but because that course has just reopened after two years of renovations club members were wary of a tournament so soon and thus the tournament was instead scheduled at the SCPGA.

The 49ers will take the rest of November, December and January off before resuming play Feb. 3 and 4 at the Ping/Arizona Intercollegiate tournament in Tucson, Ariz.
