The BeachThe Long Beach State women’s soccer team closed out its season this weekend with a victory Friday afternoon against the University of the Pacific and a tie Sunday against Cal State Northridge.

The Beach (6-9-5, 4-2-3) and the Matadors (3-13-2, 2-5-2) went into double overtime, but neither team scored in the 0-0 tie Sunday at George Allen Field.

The 49ers set a new record with 27 shots on goal, but could not find the back of the net. Meanwhile, the LBSU defense allowed only 10 shots on goal by CSUN.

Sophomore midfielder Diana Sanguinetti had a chance to take the lead for The Beach with 2:23 remaining in the second overtime with a penalty kick and again at the 1:30 mark with a direct kick but missed on both opportunities.

Senior forward Sarah Gamet had the 49ers’ third chance at scoring within the final three minutes but was stopped by Matadors goalkeeper Jen Jasper with 17 seconds remaining.

Sunday’s game was the final regular season game for seniors Gamet, Becky Ricci, Hannah Cochrun and Sarah Aguilar. Cochrun finished the season with a new single season record for goals against average with 0.95 and a new career record with a 1.25 average.

In addition, CSUN played a physical game and was hit with two red cards that led to the ejection of goalie Karen Comstock and midfielder Jenny Vargas.
Friday’s contest saw LBSU defeat visiting Pacific, 5-0, in a game in which numerous records were set for the Beach.

Junior forward Abie Curry tied the school’s single season scoring record with eight and set the all-time career scoring record with 11. Curry’s goal came at the 54:12 mark and gave the 49ers a 5-0 lead.

The game was the third time this season LBSU defeated an opponent with that score.

Aguilar and freshman midfielder/defender Shaina O’Donnell also set records against Pacific by tying the record for most assists in a game with two.

LBSU tied yet another record originally set in the 2000 season by winning four Big West Conference games, and the three home wins in a row is also a team record.

Sophomore forward Kristin Travis gave the 49ers the lead at the 24:44 mark with a goal from 35 yards out. Freshman defender Natalie Messina scored the Beach’s second goal on a header at the 27:59 mark.

LBSU took a 3-0 lead at the 30:40 mark when sophomore defender/midfielder Alexandra Rowinski took a pass from Travis and scored from 15 yards out. Gamet scored at the 52:26 mark from a pass from Aguilar to eliminate any hope of a comeback for the Tigers.

Curry’s sealed the deal for the 49ers when she stole the ball and scored from 12 yards out at the 54:12 mark to give the Beach a five-goal lead.
