The
Long Beach State women’s soccer team lost
its second consecutive Big West Conference
game Sunday as the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos
defeated the 49ers, 1-0.
The game remained scoreless until sophomore
forward Jennifer Borcich scored at the 87:20
mark to give UCSB (12-3-2, 5-0-1) the lead.
The Beach (5-9-4, 3-2-2) tried to tie the
game in the final minutes, but the Gauchos
were successful in keeping the ball in their
possession.
Late in the second half, UCSB freshman forward
Kelly Daugherty passed the ball to senior
midfielder Jen Codington on a free kick.
The ball then bounced off an LBSU defender
and Borcich took the rebound and fired it
past 49ers goalie Hannah Cochrun for her
15th goal of the season.
Borcich also had an opportunity to put the
Gauchos ahead earlier in the second half,
but failed when she went one-on-one against
Cochrun and sent the ball directly into
Cochrun’s arms. This save was one of five
on the night for Cochrun.
In addition, the defense of both teams played
extremely well.
UCSB allowed only 10 shots on goal, while
the 49ers allowed only 11.
Also, UCSB is on a three-game winning streak
and remains the only undefeated team in
the conference.
The Beach hosts their final two games of
the season this weekend. LBSU plays the
University of the Pacific on Friday at 3
p.m. and Cal State Northridge on Sunday
at 1 p.m. These games will be the last regular
season contests for seniors Cochrun, Sarah
Gamet, Becky Ricci and Sarah Aguilar.
