The 49ers neared the win on Sunday, but the Long Beach State men’s water polo team fell short to the University of the Pacific, 10-9, in double overtime.

Pacific junior Jarrod Cruzat scored his second goal of the game, giving Pacific th win for with 1:28 remaining.

The 49ers were able to seize two opportunities to tie the game, but were unable to fire in a goal as Tigers senior Danny Johnson stole the first possession and an offensive foul snubbed LBSU’s scoring chance during the last possession.

The record for the 49ers sunk to 10-12 on the season and 0-4 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while Pacific improved to 8-9, 3-2.

In the first part of the third quarter, the Tigers were ahead 5-2, but the 49ers fought back with three consecutive goals to tie the match at 5-5.

In the fourth quarter, junior Nathan Allard tied the game at 6-6 as he struck a shot over the head of Tigers goalie Laurie Trettel.

The Tigers were ahead again within the final 23 seconds remaining, but sophomore Erik Geoffroy shot a dynamic goal just in time over the head of Trettel, extending the match into overtime before losing, 10-9.

The main scorer for the 49ers was senior Kellyn Carlson, who added three goals to his record, while Geoffory scored two.

Sophomore Michael Konstas racked up seven saves in the game.

The 49ers will return to action next weekend when they host Pepperdine on Saturday and travel to UCSB on Sunday.
