water polo sinks UOP on road

The
49ers neared the win on Sunday, but the
Long Beach State men’s water polo team fell
short to the University of the Pacific,
10-9, in double overtime.
Pacific junior Jarrod Cruzat scored his
second goal of the game, giving Pacific
th win for with 1:28 remaining.
The 49ers were able to seize two opportunities
to tie the game, but were unable to fire
in a goal as Tigers senior Danny Johnson
stole the first possession and an offensive
foul snubbed LBSU’s scoring chance during
the last possession.
The record for the 49ers sunk to 10-12 on
the season and 0-4 in the Mountain Pacific
Sports Federation, while Pacific improved
to 8-9, 3-2.
In the first part of the third quarter,
the Tigers were ahead 5-2, but the 49ers
fought back with three consecutive goals
to tie the match at 5-5.
In the fourth quarter, junior Nathan Allard
tied the game at 6-6 as he struck a shot
over the head of Tigers goalie Laurie Trettel.
The Tigers were ahead again within the final
23 seconds remaining, but sophomore Erik
Geoffroy shot a dynamic goal just in time
over the head of Trettel, extending the
match into overtime before losing, 10-9.
The main scorer for the 49ers was senior
Kellyn Carlson, who added three goals to
his record, while Geoffory scored two.
Sophomore Michael Konstas racked up seven
saves in the game.
The 49ers will return to action next weekend
when they host Pepperdine on Saturday and
travel to UCSB on Sunday.
